A federal Michigan judge has dropped six federal charges against a Detroit doctor who is accused of female genital mutilation (FGM) against at least nine girls no older than 7. Nice Leng’ete, a Maasai woman, ran and hid from her cutting ceremony when she was a little girl. In her culture, the cutting ceremony is a celebration that turns girls into women and marks daughters as eligible brides.
"Ms. Leng’ete never forgot what her sister suffered, and as she grew up, she was determined to protect other Maasai girls. She started a program that goes village to village, collaborating with elders and girls to create a new rite of passage — without the cutting" ("She Ran From The Cut"). The cutting procedure is very important in Maasai culture. The Maasai community is run by male elders who believe women are not women unless they re cut; therefore a woman who has not undergone the procedure is not suitable for marriage. The article states, "Ms. Leng’ete’s community [had] a name for her. 'It’s a very bad name in my native tongue,' she said, one meant to shame a whole family" ("She Ran From The Cut"). This added social pressure is the reason why many of the girls have the procedure done, even if they are reluctant. Leng'ete recollects that within her community, many ostracized her and see her as a bad example. However, she does not regret her decision, and she continues to bargain with the elders for other young girls. Read more here. 9/14/2018 "Two Sisters Bled to Death in Somalia After a Female Genital Mutilation Procedure"Read NowThe ten and eleven year old sisters, Aasiyo Abdi Warsame and Khadijo, were ritually circumcised on September 11, 2018 in a Somalian village. A day after the procedure, the sisters continued to lose blood. The mother decided to take them to the hospital but both sisters did not make it in time. This story, in September of this year, sparked the first prosecution of an FGM case in Somalia.
The Bohras are a sect within the Ismā'īlī branch of Shia Islam. Unkown of how the practice was adapted, for generations Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) was a common practice but it was a forbidden to talk about. Girls were expected to under go the operation with no questions ask and to not speak of what has been done to her. Until now.
This article also features, Mariya Karimjee, a Pakistani-American writer, who wrote her FGM experience in 2015. Which went viral and hopefully inspire others around her to take a stand.
